This is the excellent anti-Gnostic web page that contains the excellent two-part essay from Doug Groothuis showing quite clearly why Gnosticism was and still is a reprehensible heresy.  The essay starts at the bottom of my remarks on Gnosticism at a point where I was still not clear on just how bad a heresy this was.
